If you've searched "how to make money with micro1 AI data licensing broker," you've probably seen big referral numbers. This is an independent, fact-checked look at what micro1 is, how its company data referral program works, what it pays according to its own published pages, and what has to happen before anyone is paid. Every figure below links to a public source. We're not affiliated with micro1, and nothing here is a guarantee of income.
What is micro1?
micro1 is a San Francisco-area AI company founded in 2022 by CEO Ali Ansari. According to TechCrunch, it helps AI companies find and manage human experts who create and label data for AI training, and it competes in the same space as Scale AI, Surge and Mercor. Its AI recruiter, called Zara, interviews and vets applicants who want to work as micro1 contractors ("experts").
Per micro1's Series A announcement dated September 12, 2025, micro1 raised a $35M Series A at a $500M valuation, led by 01 Advisors. TechCrunch reported the company said it had reached $50M in annual recurring revenue at the time. A press release from investor Antler was later updated to say micro1 had raised more than $100M at a $4B valuation, as reported by Forbes. We list these for context only; they say nothing about what an individual referrer will earn.
Two different ways people "make money with micro1"
Search results blur these together, so it helps to separate them:
- Working as an expert. micro1 recruits domain experts (engineers, writers, professionals) to create and evaluate AI training data. That's contract work you apply for and are vetted for. It isn't brokering.
- Referring companies (the "broker" path). micro1 also runs a company data partnership program, where companies license operational data, and a referral program that pays people who introduce those companies. This is what most "AI data licensing broker" searches are about, and it's the focus of this review.
How the micro1 company referral program works
According to micro1's company referral page, the process is:
- Register as a referral partner at refer.micro1.ai and copy your unique referral link.
- Share the link with companies that could be a fit.
- Your point of contact at the company creates a company profile through your link and completes a "data manifest."
- micro1's team evaluates whether the company fits a data partnership.
- If both sides agree, the company goes through contracting, transfers approved data, and micro1 approves it.
- Only then does the referral bonus enter micro1's payout approval process. Approved payouts are sent by wire transfer.
What micro1 says it pays referrers
micro1's company referral page currently lists these referral bonuses:
| Partnership type | Referral bonus (as published) | Company compensation (as published) |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise Data Partnership | $50,000 for deals up to $700,000, or 7.5% of deal value above $700,000 | $100K–$2M+ for approved data packages |
| Defunct Company Data Partnership | $75,000 for deals up to $1 million, or 7.5% above $1 million | $100K–$2M+ for approved data packages |
| Other partnerships not listed in the portal | 7.5% of deal value | Not specified |
Note that these numbers have changed over time. micro1's own June 16, 2026 announcement of the program said referrers could earn "up to $25,000" per company. The live page now advertises $50,000+. That's a good reminder to read the current page and terms, not a screenshot someone posted.
Company requirements
micro1's page says it's looking for established companies with 30+ full-time employees, mature operations and substantial historical operational data, such as internal communications, SOPs, project histories, CRM records and support tickets. Data should be primarily in English. It says it's prioritizing US companies, then other Western markets. The defunct-company track targets companies that are no longer operating.
Who can refer, and the rules that matter
- Age: anyone over 18 can refer, and you don't need to be a micro1 expert, per the referral page. People in places where micro1 can't operate are excluded.
- Attribution is link-only. The company must register through your link. If it signed up on its own or through another partner, micro1 says attribution can't be changed later.
- No impersonation. You can't use an @expert.micro1.ai address for outreach or present yourself as a micro1 employee.
- No submitting on a company's behalf. The company must complete its own application.
- Consent first. micro1's Referral Program Terms require you to get consent from an authorized company representative before referring it.
- Payout discretion. The terms say micro1 may verify, withhold, delay, reduce or refuse payouts at its discretion, may apply holdback periods and may claw back payouts in some cases. Payouts are gross amounts, and you're responsible for taxes.
So, how do people actually make money with it?
Realistically, the same way any company-referral program works: by knowing decision-makers at companies that fit, getting their consent, sending the right link and waiting through a long process. A bonus is only possible after a company qualifies, signs, transfers data and has that data approved. micro1's FAQ says plainly that a referral doesn't guarantee a bonus and that there's no guaranteed timeframe. Many referrals, in any program like this, will never pay.
What tends to help:
- Targeting companies that clearly meet the size, language and market criteria.
- Talking to owners, executives or operations leaders, not just friendly employees.
- Being transparent that you may earn a fee.
- Never promising a company a payout figure.

Pros and cons, fairly stated
Pros
- Clear published bonus table and process.
- No cap on the number of referrals.
- Backed by a well-funded, publicly reported company.
- A track for defunct companies, which few programs mention.
Cons
- Payment comes late, only after data is transferred and approved.
- Broad payout discretion, holdbacks and clawback rights in the terms.
- Strict link-only attribution.
- Company eligibility is narrow: 30+ employees, English data, US/Western priority.
- Published amounts have already changed once.
Is there another option?
Yes. micro1 isn't the only company-data licensing program with referral fees. The referral program we feature pays: US-headquartered companies: the greater of $50,000 or 6% for the first five Qualified Deals. Companies headquartered outside the US: 6%, no minimum. The program's final written terms apply. It publishes a range of $100K–$5M for a company's license. We compare the two side by side in micro1 vs. a Company-Referral Data Licensing Program. Nothing stops a broker from learning both and sending each company to whichever fits, as long as you follow each program's attribution and consent rules.
The verdict
micro1's company referral program is a real, published program from a well-funded AI data company, with clear stated bonuses and strict rules. It can pay well if a referred company closes and its data is approved, but nothing is guaranteed, payouts are discretionary and the process can be long. Treat it as a professional referral practice, read micro1's Referral Program Terms in full, and be skeptical of anyone selling a course or promising a number.
